RELEASED BY: Documentation Control
SUBJECT: SCO Unix V/386 Release 3.2, Version 4.0, SCO Open
Desktop Release 2.0, and Adaptec 154x-compatible SCSI Host Adapters
Problem An Adaptec 154x-compatible SCSI Host Adapter is not recognized on some
fast 486- based computers.
Cause The SCSI Adaptec 154x driver provided with SCO Unix (ad) execute too
quickly on 66 MHz and 50 MHz 486-based computers. The driver checks for the
presence of the Adaptec 154x-compatible SCSI Host Adapter and checks 131,072
times for a response, but on a fast system, the loop completes and the check
times out before the SCSI Host Adapter responds. SCO Unix will then fail to
recognize the SCSI Host Adapter.
Solution A future release of Maintenance Supplement Version 4.2 for SCO
Unix V/386 Release 3.2 Version 4.0 will correct this problem. The next version
of SCO Open Desktop will correct this problem. The following temporary
procedure circumvents this problem:
1. Make sure the computer is running in slow speed during installation.
Almost all ISA or EISA computers have at least two speeds. The speed can be set
on an external Turbo switch or via BIOS Setup. The low speed is usually 8 MHz.
You can also disable internal and external cache memory to slow the system.
2. Install the operating system up to the point where the operating
system is ready to be booted from the hard disk drive.
3. After successfully installing the operating system, bring it up in
System Maintenance (single user) mode. Make copies of the Unix kernel and the
drivers to be patched:
cd /
cp unix unix.orig
cd /etc/conf/pack.d/ad
cp Driver.o Driver.o.orig
cd /etc/conf/pack.d.eiad
cp Driver.o Driver.o.orig
Technical Tip TTSCSI.033
4. Changing the Adaptec 154x Driver
To change the Adaptec 154x driver, type:
cd /etc/conf/pack.d/ad
_fst -w Driver.o
ahapresent+9?X
The computer will print:
ahapresent+0x9: 0x20000
then type:
ahapresent+9?W 100000
The computer will print:
ahapresent+0x9: 0x20000= 0x100000
then type:
aha_sndcmd+9?X
The computer will print:
aha_sndcmd+0x9: 0x20000
then type:
aha_sndcmd+9?W 100000
The computer will print:
aha_sndcmd+0x9: 0x20000= 0x100000
5. Relink the kernel and shut down the system. Type:
cd /etc/conf/cf.d
.link_unix -y
sync
reboot
It is safe to use reboot (ADM) only because the system is in System
Maintenance Mode. Change from slow speed to fast speed after the computer boots
either via BIOS Setup, enabling internal and external cache memory, or by
pressing the Turbo switch.
SCO Unix should boot normally and should recognize the Adaptec-compatible SCSI
Host Adapter.
